Careful organisation and forward planning can minimise the stress of moving house.
Six weeks before move day
Start decluttering – throw out anything you have never used.
If you are renting, notify your landlord in writing.
If you plan to use a removals company, get 3 quotes and book early.
Research the local area if you are moving somewhere new.
Check home insurance to insurance covered on day of moving.
Four weeks before move day
If you are packing yourself, make sure you have sufficient packing materials
Book storage if required.
If there are parking restrictions at either address, contact the local authories to arrange suspensions for removals vans to park.
Notify utility companies about your departure.
Arrange redirection of your post.
Two weeks before move day
Arrange for children and pets to be looked after.
Deregister from your GP if moving out of area.
Notify your newspaper and milkman of a date for services to stop.
Start running the freezer down
One week before move day
Confirm final details with removal company.
Arrange for disconnection of appliances.
Start to dismantle any flat pack furniture.
Three days before move day
Leave any spare keys where they will be visible and ensure that they are labelled.
Make up a box of refreshments & essentials for move day including, toilet rolls, lightbulbs, tea making equipment, scissors, toiletries, pen and paper, torch, first aid kit, basic cutlery, crockery etc.
Two days before move day
Defrost fridge/freezer
Pack valuables and documents and store in a safe place.
Make a list of contact details ie Solicitor, Estate Agent, Mortgage Broker
Confirm when you will receive keys to the property
One day before move day
All packing should be done except essentials.
Charge your mobile phone.
Check all cupboards, loft and sheds.
Move Day
Show removals team what items are going or staying
Drop children/pets off
Final clean of house
Note all meter readings.
Do a final check of the property you are moving out of.
Lock all windows and doors and leave any useful information for new occupants ie where meters are, fuse boxes, stopcock
At Your New Home
Check all services are working – electric, water, gas
Put the kettle on for removals team. Arrive at the property before them so that you can show them what goes where.
Check all property removed from removals van.
Don’t try to unpack everything today!
